Pony.ai Goes Public in Hong Kong: Profitable Robotaxis by 2028? (2025)

Pony.ai, the Chinese robotaxi company, has made its trading debut in Hong Kong, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards profitability. With a focus on large-scale commercialization, the company's CEO, James Peng, predicts a profitable future within the next three to four years.

Peng highlighted the company's relentless innovation and exploration over the past nine years, emphasizing that they are now poised for success. He stated, 'Once our fleet reaches approximately 50,000 vehicles, our cash flow will turn positive.' Based on their current rollout speed, Pony.ai aims to achieve this scale by 2028 or 2029.

The Hong Kong listing is a strategic move, as it provides a dual-primary listing structure across the US and Hong Kong. This decision was made to leverage the reputation and capital from Asia, which Peng believes will be crucial for the company's future development. With a strong presence in China, Pony.ai is the only company licensed to operate fully driverless Level 4 robotaxi services in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.

The company's Gen-7 robotaxi platform, developed in collaboration with Toyota, BAIC, and GAC, has achieved remarkable cost reductions. It decreases the bill-of-materials cost by over 70% compared to the previous generation, while also slashing computing unit costs by 80% and solid-state LiDAR costs by 68%. These advancements set the stage for commercial mass production.

Pony.ai's partnership with Toyota is a significant aspect of their growth. One of the Gen-7 models, co-developed with Toyota and based on the bZ4X platform, is set to begin mass production by the end of this year or early next year. Additionally, the companies have formed a joint venture that extends beyond vehicle production, focusing on robotaxi operations and a long-term strategic partnership.

Co-founder and CTO, Lou Tiancheng, described the Hong Kong listing as a turning point, stating, 'The ringing of the gong today marks our leap from technological exploration to full-scale autonomous commercial operations.' He emphasized that Pony.ai's vision goes beyond autonomous driving, aiming to redefine mobility services with a scalable and efficient approach.
