More than ever before, men are striving for healthier, more youthful looking skin. Each month, our clinic sees an increasing number of men coming in for advice, good skin care and clinical treatments, including injectables. It doesn’t take much time, nor does it have to be overly complicated to achieve good skin. Here we look at just 8 essential skincare routine for men So no more stealing your partners products! Read below for some great advise on how to take care of your skin:
1. CHOOSE YOUR SKIN TYPE
When it comes to taking care of your skin, the most important thing every man should do is determine their skin type. Skin types are commonly broken down according to the following traits:
- Dry: Skin that regularly experiences flaking or itching
- Oily: Skin that typically appears shiny or greasy
- Combination: Skin that is dry in some areas and oily in others
- Sensitive: Skin that reacts negatively to harsh products, resulting in stinging after product use
- Normal: Skin that is mostly acne-free and not sensitive
- Acne-Prone: Skin that is prone to moderate or severe acne
- Mature: Skin that experiences aging-related issues like wrinkling or sagginess
2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PRODUCTS
A thorough understanding of your skin type will help you to determine your skin’s specific needs. You should select skincare products that are made for your skin type (i.e., men with acne-prone skin should choose an “oil-free” moisturiser while men with sensitive skin should opt for a “gentle, fragrance-free” product). We will look at some great products for each skin type at the end of this article.
3. WASH YOUR FACE DAILY
Washing your face each day is one of the best things you can do for your skin. Facial cleansing is important as it removes dirt, oil, and other unwanted impurities from the skin. Without proper cleansing, your skin would be covered with a layer of dirt and grime, making it difficult for other products to penetrate the skin properly. Not only that, your pores will become clogged, increasing their size. This leads to dirty, unhealthy looking skin. Instead of using bar soap, which can overly dry out the skin, opt for a cleanser designed for facial use.
4. SHAVING
Improper shaving can result in problems including ingrown hairs, nicks, cuts, razor burn, and irritation, which can be uncomfortable and ruin the appearance of the skin. Make sure to always use a good clean and sharp razor. Use high-quality shaving cream, and shave in the direction of hair growth. If you are prone to ingrown hairs or acne, an electric razor is best. This is because it cuts the hair straight, rather than at an angle. Regular razors cut the hair on a 45 degree angle which encourages the hair to grow back towards the skin, causing ingrown hairs and acne.
5. MOISTURISE
You may prefer to use serums before a moisturiser, and we will recommend some below, but the daily use of a good quality moisturiser will leave your skin looking soft, younger and brighter while keeping the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles at bay. Moisturisers work by adding hydration to the skin while simultaneously sealing water in. For best results, apply your moisturiser right after showering while the skin is still damp.
6. EXFOLIATE
Men typically have thicker facial skin than women, so regularly exfoliating dead skin cells and other debris is the key to healthy and smooth skin. Exfoliating at least once a week will also help maintain good moisture levels while also enhancing the efficacy of the skincare products you use. It will help to remove debris from the pores so the skin will look much clearer and healthier.
7. SPF
Doing simple things like using a broad-spectrum high SPF sunscreen and avoiding the outdoors during peak UV hours can have a significant impact on the appearance and health of your skin. UV damage causes not only a higher risk of melanoma but also premature ageing, pigmentation, uneven texture and thicker dull skin.
We recommend using a sunscreen with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and using a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Remember to reapply every 2 – 4 hours.
REMEMBER: Cover your lips, ears and eyelids too. These are all common areas to suffer sunburn and melanoma.
8. SKIN CHECKS
- 16,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma every year in Australia.
- It affects more men than women
- It is the second most common form of cancer in men and third most common cancer in women
- Australia and New Zealand have the highest melanoma rates in the world
- Melanoma commonly affects people younger than 40
These are very sobering facts which make point 7, SPF, so important. Aside from being sun smart, making yourself aware of your body, moles, skin irritations and any changes are so important. Next time you are at your GP, have them look over your body and check for irregularities, or better still, go to a skin cancer clinic once a year for a complete skin check. You don’t require a referral for this and it could save your life.
